Abstract

of ECF16 Chairman Emmanuel E. Gdoutos The "16th European Conference of Fracture," (ECF16), was held in the beautiful town of Alexandroupolis, Greece, site of the Democritus University of Thrace, July 3-7, 2006. Within the context of ECF16 forty six special symposia and sessions were organized by renowned experts from around the world. The present volume is devoted to the symposium on "Measuring, Monitoring and Modeling Concrete Properties" (MMMCP) organized by my wife Dr. Maria Konsta-Gdoutos in honor of our good friend Surendra P. Shah of Nor- western University, USA. I am greatly indebted to Maria for undertaking the difficult task to organize this symposium with great success and edit the symposium volume. Started in 1976, the European Conference of Fracture (ECF) takes place every two years in a European country. Its scope is to promote world-wide cooperation among s- entists and engineers concerned with fracture and fatigue of solids. ECF16 was under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) and was sponsored by the American Society of Testing and Materials, the British Society for Stain Measurement, the Society of Experimental Mechanics, the Italian Society for Experimental Mechanics and the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers. ECF16 focused in all aspects of structural integrity with the objective of improving the safety and performance of engineering str- tures, components, systems and their associated materials.

Abstract

Three Dimensional System Integration: IC Stacking From Process Technology to System Design Edited by: Antonis Papanikolaou Dimitrios Soudris Riko Radojcic Three-dimensional (3D) integrated circuit (IC) stacking enables packing more functionality, as well as integration of heterogeneous materials, devices, and signals, in the same space (volume). This results in consumer electronics (e.g., mobile, handheld devices) which can run more powerful applications, such as full-length movies and 3D games, with longer battery life. This technology is so promising that it is expected to be a mainstream technology less than 10-15 years from its original conception. To achieve this type of end product, changes in the entire manufacturing and design process of electronic systems are taking place. This book provides an overview of the entire trajectory from basic process technology issues to the design at the system level of three dimensionally integrated nano-electronic systems. Physical design and design at the architecture and system level are emphasized in this book, since the technology has matured to the point that these issues have become very important. This book is intended for an audience with a basic grasp of electrical engineering concepts including some familiarity with fabrication of semiconductor devices, Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) and computer architecture. ¢Covers the entire range of 3D chip stacking topics in such a way that a non-expert (in 3D integration) reader can understand exactly what this technology is, why it is beneficial, how it changes conventional practices and how it can affect his/her work; ¢Provides a high-level (tutorial-like) description of 3D system integration that will cover issues ranging from process technology and manufacturing of 3D systems to the design of 3D components and entire systems; ¢First book to offer not only a high-level view of the entire field of 3D integration, but also an understanding of the interactions between the various phases of design and manufacturing.

Abstract

In this candid and informative book, George M. Woodwell, a leader in the study of global environmental change, illuminates practical considerations (and frustrations) involved in building green. When the renowned Woods Hole Research Center needed a new office, Woodwell led efforts to utilize state-of-the-shell green building techniques to retrofit a Victorian mansion built in 1877 into the Center's new home. This is the story of how scientists and contractors alike confronted the limitations of available materials, laws, and building codes. Woodwell sets this struggle in a larger context, as part of the global need to minimize carbon emissions and environmental impacts. Beginning with his experience of the retrofit of a single building, he shares insights into rethinking how we design, use, and adapt the built environment to preserve the functional integrity of the natural landscape.

Abstract

Fatigue has long been recognized as a mechanism that can provoke catastrophic material failure in structural applications and researchers are now turning to the development of prediction tools in order to reduce the cost of determining design criteria for any new material. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites explains these highly scientific subjects in a simple yet thorough way. Fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composite materials and structural components is described through the presentation of numerous experimental results. Many examples help the reader to visualize the failure modes of laminated composite materials and structural adhesively bonded joints. Theoretical models, based on these experimental data, are demonstrated and their capacity for fatigue life modeling and prediction is thoroughly assessed. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites gives the reader the opportunity to learn about methods for modeling the fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composites, about statistical analysis of experimental data, and about theories for life prediction under loading patterns that produce multiaxial fatigue stress states. The authors combine these theories to establish a complete design process that is able to predict fatigue life of fiber-reinforced composites under multiaxial, variable amplitude stress states. A classic design methodology is presented for demonstration and theoretical predictions are compared to experimental data from typical material systems used in the wind turbine rotor blade industry. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites also presents novel computational methods for modeling fatigue behavior of composite materials, such as artificial neural networks and genetic programming, as a promising alternative to the conventional methods. It is an ideal source of information for researchers and graduate students in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and materials science.

Abstract

Cementitious materials, rocks and fibre-reinforced composites commonly termed as quasibrittle, need a different fracture mechanics approach to model the crack propagation study because of the presence of significant size of fracture process zone ahead of the crack-tip. Recent studies show that concrete structures manifest three important stages in fracture process: crack initiation, stable crack propagation and unstable fracture or failure. Fracture Mechanics concept can better explain the above various stages including the concepts of ductility, size-effect, strain softening and post-cracking behavior of concrete and concrete structures.

Abstract

These are the papers presented at the Fib-RILEM workshop held in Madrid, Spain, in November 2010. The assessment of deterioration and aging of concrete structures, most commonly through reinforcement corrosion, is not considered in current structural codes or standards. Some guidelines manuals exist, and research has been done, but there is as yet no accepted methodology nor models that could be used by engineers. This book deals with all aspects related to modelling of corroding structures and provides state-of-the-art information on structural models for corroding structures.
